Jeepneys Share “YOUR BODY YOUR SHIP” Video

LA artist claims the past and future in a trip through the cosmos

/ July 21, 2016

Jeepneys is the project of Anna Luisa Petrisko, a Los Angeles based artist working in music, video, dance, and performance artist. She is a member of Black Salt Collective, whose members are all black, brown, and indigenous women, creating work about ancestry in contemporary context. Named after the the iconic converted WWII army jeeps of the Philippines, Jeepneys delves into the nooks and crannies of post-colonial identity through visual art and music. Through her investigation, we see the formation of a landscape standing in juxtaposition to colonial ruins, resisting the erasure of the ancestral past and demanding a future free of the colonizer.

The new video “YOUR BODY YOUR SHIP” – directed by Nastya Valentine – features Jeepneys and crew engaging in spiritual gyrations, jubilant bike riding, and other assembled rituals as they prepare their bodies/spaceships for a little healing time travel through the cosmos. Barriers are split open, transmissions are sent and received from desired destinations across space and time.
